Jenesis's Timeline
Details: Jenesis Dockery was shot on July 25, 2023, and died on July 27, just a few days before her 9th birthday on July 31.
She was shot in the head by a boy with a history of violence. Allegedly, a year prior, the boy had stabbed a student and was known as a bully who brandished weapons on social media.
Initial Cover-Up and Evidence: The babysitter called Fon Dockery to inform him of the shooting. He asked the babysitter if she had called the rescue squad. He told her to hang up and call them to save Jenesis. It took the Babysitter 6 minutes to contact the ambulance! The boy's mother attempted to cover up the incident by claiming the weapon fell from a closet. She lied and was not punished as a result. Gun residue was found on the boy's hands, proving he was the shooter.

The 12-year old shooter was arrested and remains in Cumberland County Juvenile Detention Center. His next hearing was set for October 4th, 2023" Queen City News- " Dad wants pre-teen charges in his Cumberland County daughter's death to spend life incarcerated" Justin Moore
Currently The boy was released by the Cumberland County Juvenile Detention Center into the care of a family member. At this point Cumberland county is treating the shooter with more disdain than the deceased. This boy is a cold murderer!
Questions About Responsibility: The mother is seen as responsible for enabling her son's behavior by not taking action against his violent tendencies. The police found the murder weapon and another weapon that the boy had taken from his grandfather's safe. Why is the mother not being held accountable for her actions. It was two weeks after the shooting of Jenesis before there was an arrest. The grandfather was the owner of both weapons. Why was he not charged due to his negligence?
Unanswered Questions: The duration of the time that the guns were missing is unclear. It is unknown if the grandfather gave the guns to the boy, if they hunted together, or if the grandfather taught him to shoot. Why was the Grandfather not held accountable for his part of this tragedy?
The sheriff's department's refusal to interrogate the mother and grandfather raises suspicions about the thoroughness of the investigation.
Comparison to Other Cases: In 2019, a mass shooting in Detroit by a 15-year-old resulted in seven people shot and four deaths. The shooter received a life sentence plus 24 years. The parents of the Detroit shooter were charged in March 2024 and sentenced to 10-15 years for arming him. Broader Questions: What makes this incident different than the shooting in Detroit Michigan? What will it take to get justice for Jenesis Dockery? How can justice be achieved in a society where it seems elusive? Who decides who gets justice, and what is the value of a life?
